| Name: | Natalya |
|---|---|
| Birthdate: | 1990-09-15 |
Character Information
Name: Natalya Mikhailovna Fyodorov-Ivanov (The rare timesshe's talked to directly someone shortens her name, it's generally to Nata)
Race: Human (Potential)
Age: 18
Birthday: September 15th, 1990
Origin: Moscow, Russia
Occupation: Student; Environmental Mathematics
Online Handle: aliter
Magician Family: Not a magician, but she is sort of part of the Ivanov family.
Appearance: Natalya always looks vaguely pleasant, if slightly puzzled. Her expression rarely changes from 'vaguely' something to another; happy to angry, to confused, to pleased, to concerned. Strong emotion never passes across her face, and some people whisper about how it's always the quiet people you have to watch out for.
In almost always ways regarding her appearance, Natalya is average to bland. She doesn't stand out as a beauty or a "beast", and is generally ignored in favor of someone more interesting, even if they would generally be considered uglier. Her hair and her eyes are mouse-brown, her skin pale with a tendency towards burning, and her clothes are whatever someone else bought for her when they decided she needed new clothes. Usually, the clothes are very boring "classic" styles in shades of brown, black, and blue, with the occasional yellow or red thrown in.

Background: Loneliness was the defining feature of Natalya's childhood. She was the quiet, middle girl child between two loud, charismatic brothers who appeared to embody all that their father and stepmother desired in children, and that was only when they could spare time from the economic crisis they had found themselves in. The first years of Natayla's childhood were defined by it, although she couldn't remember much of it.
By the time she could remember, things had settled again. Though her actual mother was dead, her stepmother Katerina (a member of the Ivanov family, although it was a long while before Natalya was aware of what that meant) filled in the role well enough no one but her older brother ever knew the difference. While supposedly they were not as well off as before, they were well off enough to live in the small edge between upper middle and upper class. All three children were homeschooled, where her tutors discovered her mostly-undeveloped ability for numbers and subjects that had to do with patterns and linear-thinking. Her father didn't care and probably didn't remember; her mother knew but didn't seem to care, so Natalya didn't care much about it either. She spent her time reading, walking around outside, or solving various puzzle-type things (like jigsaw puzzles, or convincing one of her tutors and/or Katerina to play chess).
The next big change of her life came when Katerina, for reasons Natalya still is not aware of, found her backbone and left her husband to return to her family (or, more specifically, her father) in Moscow proper and now the small, exclusive area they lived in. Even more brazenly, considering her stepmother could have been Natalya's actual mother in that they shared many personality traits when it came to being passive and docile in the midst of strong male personalities, her stepmother requested that Natalya and her younger brother come live with her.
Her father sent Natalya. She was sixteen at the time, and while very intelligent, had lived in a bubble of the same people and the same atmosphere for her entire life-that-she-can-remember. Now, she was thrust into the heart of another family that only shared superficial similarities to her own. Males were dominate and preferred, but daughters were not ignored and in many cases, no less spoiled. There were suddenly people paying attention to her, and to what she was good and bad at and how she acted, and she was being judged for how she was.
Which would have been terrifying enough if they hadn't also sent her to school at the same time. She had avoided the embarrassing adolescent moments by not having anyone around to be embarrassed around, and the high school system quickly made up for the lack in the two years she was there. Natalya was new and, much to her horror, she had somehow gained the inability to walk a significant amount of time without falling over/onto someone or something.
That cleared up by the time she graduated. She even managed to make some friends, of either the tall, confident types who wanted someone around to always agree with them, or the people convinced they would manage to reform her personality into someone more assertive/attractive. They failed.
While she was off in the hell known as high school, her father died. She wasn't sad to see him go, but neither was she happy. It did mean, however, that her brothers were now able to come and live with Katerina, who had remained their guardian in the will. Her older brother, who was old enough to not need a guardian and was off on his own anyways, decided not to, but her younger brother, who had always been Katerina's favorite, decided to take up the invitation. He fit into the Ivanov family well enough. Much better than Natalya did, at any rate.
After high school, she would've happily locked herself up and become a hermit if it had been up to her. However, it was decided that she would go to Countshire for college (she could've gotten in if she was just human, due to her Ivanov connections, but the reason her mother called her over to bring her into the family was because she was a potential. Not that Natalya knows what that is, even if she has a vague idea of the big secret behind the Ivanovs; she's just hoping it's not something like a potential sacrifice). Since she had just seen what happens to people who don't do as they should be doing, thanks to her "uncle" Lev, any possible backbone in protesting this plan was now so far in hiding they would likely never be found again. Even so, now she's dealing with a major shift of culture and college in her not-natural language, once again around all sorts of new people and "family" she's only half-familiar with anyways.
Personality: Natalya continues to live in her little bubble, disconnected from the majority of the world and its problems. Life is a puzzle, and she immerses herself in where there is a "right" answer. Math is her first love, especially when the problems get more and more complicated. Teasing out the one answer that is true can keep her occupied for as long as it takes, although excessive noise and distractions can take her out of the right frame of mind. (Excessive in this case being akin to someone walking by)
She's very passive and docile, very able to be lead around and agree with most things a person says without thinking about whether it is right or wrong. Even in things she does have strong opinions about (her love of math and hatred of philosophy, for example) don't lead her to argue, but to nod and smile until the topic passes. She doesn't do anything with these strongly-held-for-the-moment opinions, and may forget about them entirely until they come up again.
Her mind works in a very linear fashion, able to pinpoint Point A to point B without letting emotions get in the way. The problems of the world don't get categorized into what is right and what is wrong, but what is and what is not. Right and wrong have too many variables that she can't see to be comfortable with.
People are all about random variables she can't see, and she remains ill at ease with most of them. Her studies into psychology and sociology are to establish a pattern of personality and interactions, so she has something to pull from when she needs to. Natalya gets along best with people who are emotionally stable and don't jump from emotion to emotion, because she can keep track of them better.
